MILA HIZI, ZIDUMISHWE?

AFRICAN GIRL

AFRICAN WOMAN

Lakini sasa pamoja na yote hayo, JE, MILA ZA NAMNA HII LAZMA ZIENDELEE KUZINGATIWA?  nazungumzia hizo ambazo ziko kwenye picha hii.  NAOMBA UTOE MAONI YAKO...  MILA ZA NAMNA HII ZIZINGATIWE NA KUDUMISHWA?

Best foods for fighting the flu

If the flu has caught up with you or your family, there are certain foods that can help while you're ill and resting up. TODAY diet and nutrition editor Madelyn Fernstrom reveals the foods you should be reaching for, including broths, popsicles, bananas, and more.
You got the flu shot. You've been washing your hands. But, despite your best efforts, you've been knocked out by the flu. You may not feel like eating at all, but there are some foods that will help during your illness and on your way to recovery. They work for colds, as well.
When you have a fever, drink fluids to avoid dehydrationWith a fever, appetite is low (or gone), and most important is to remain hydrated. A good rule of thumb is to check your urine, which is pale yellow in the adequately hydrated state. If you are getting dehydrated, it will be deep yellow in color. This visible test is the easiest way to make sure you get enough fluids, even when you don't feel like eating.

Tanzanians love their music, but are denied!

We seem to have totally abandoned efforts that were there in the 1960s and 70s, when Tanzanians strived to reinvent themselves and discard undesirable cultural traits that were a consequence of close to a century of colonial bondage.
There is no area where this is more brazenly displayed than in entertainment. There is little regard Tanzanian music and dances, which is a shame. Our country is blessed with a diversity of peoples – around 120 ethnic groups – each with rich cultural heritage that our artistes could base their creative energies.
We don’t care for these anymore. Instead, our musicians, go to great lengths to “copy and paste” foreign beats, fronting them as Tanzanian, simply because the lyrics are in Kiswahili.
The excuse from the artistes, producers and promoters is that they offer what the people want. But it is not true that Tanzanians are not keen on music that is traditional, ostensibly because it “doesn’t sell”.
Our artistes are simply not giving it to them, being as they are victims of Western cultural machinations. And, we aver, laziness. They want quick results, so the thinking is: if there are ready-made beats, why sit down and create original hits based on our own heritage?
Now the enthusiasm that greeted last Friday’s show at the Russian Cultural Centre, organised by Focus on Me, rubbishes the notion that Tanzanians aren’t keen on their traditional dances and music. It was a full house affair, with frenzied audience crying for more throughout.
Let that be a lesson to local players in the entertainment industry, including TV and radio stations. Tanzanians are keen on their own beat and song; compose it, promote it and give it to them.
Let us have Bongo Flava alright, but derive it from our own beats and rhythms. Slavish copycatting and blind copycatting at the expense of our own cultural roots is a big shame!

Why are all naval vessels ( ships ) reffered to as "she"?

There are many stories and myths concerning the origin of referring to vessels in the feminine, but one thing matters above all else - sailors (myself included) are extremely superstitious creatures, and changing long-standing traditions of the sea aren't easy unless the order comes from God himself. Even then it probably wouldn't happen soon.

Popular theories include goddesses & linguistics (ships in other languages are referred to in the feminine), and in recent times you could even say that female sponsors of ship christenings could be a reason. But none of it really holds up for those of us who are and have been sailors.

There's evidence that points to ships being referred to in the masculine up until the 16th century, but most Navy traditions on the subject point to the relationship between sailors (until the past few decades, all male) and their ships as being akin to a marriage. Most sailors spend more time onboard their ships than they do with their wives (in my first year of marriage I was away for 293 days), and the daily relationship can be easily compared with a male/female relationship. While some compare the cost of ship maintenance to that of a wife or girlfriend (the latter being said to be the more expensive by some), over time it's the psychological connection that a sailor feels for his ship that is the biggest parallel to an actual relationship.

Consider that a sailor must fight with, forgive, understand, love, hate, anguish over, and generally give his soul to his ship. In return, the ship acts as home, protector, comforter, etc. The term being "married to a ship" is no idle term. The divorce rate among sailors is a lot higher than the normal average, and it's because the sailor is spending more time with his ship than his wife.

Rear Admiral Francis D. Foley wrote a great article in Proceedings (Naval Institute Magazine) reflecting on this very subject (link below). One thing he mentions as an analogy is that like a woman, "A ship costs a lot to dress, sometimes blows a bit of smoke, and requires periodic overhauls to extend her useful life."

There's also the long-held tradition about treating vessels with the same respect you would a lady. Treat a ship in any other fashion and you'll wish you weren't aboard.

Another analysis is that all sailors are at the mercy of Mother Nature - by referencing vessels in the feminine, we stay on good terms with her, and no sailor wants to anger Mother Nature. Remember I said we are extremely superstitious when it comes to the sea, and for good reason.

In the end, aside from the relationship aspect, I've always felt that males tend to look at father figures for guidance and leadership, but when it comes to love and comfort, we seek out our mothers and wives or girlfriends. Being at sea is an isolating experience, even with a lot of other sailors, and a ship fills a psychological void that fellow sailors cannot.

The10 best movies of 2012

"Frankenweenie" and "The Cabin in the Woods" are tied for the 10th spot on this list of 2012's best films. Horror movies rarely get respect in year-end lists, but of the three films scripted or co-scripted by Joss Whedon this year ("The Avengers" and "Much Ado About Nothing" were the others), "The Cabin in the Woods" was the most fiendishly ingenious -- a horror movie that was truly out of the box. As for "Frankenweenie," pictured, this 3-D black-and-white tribute to classic Universal monster movies showed yet again that Tim Burton is most himself in animated film.

Raisi maskini zaidi duniani

Imechapishwa Jumapili, 14 Oktoba 2012 14:37
Imeandikwa na MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay
Imesomwa mara: 8298

Wabunge waanza kujiandikisha JKT

Posted Januari19 2013 saa 11:23 AM

“Naomba usubiri Dodoma, tutakuambia hali ilivyo,” alisema Ndugai.

“Mimi tayari nimeshajiandikisha, tunasubiri tu kwenda kwenye mafunzo hayo,”alisema Machali.

Marijuana Compounds: Highly Beneficial, Yet Illegal

Is marijuana bad for you? Marijuana has the potential to get you high: most people know this. And a growing number of people are becoming aware of the medicinal properties of this plant. But, the compounds that make marijuana such a healer are largely unknown to the general public. These compounds won’t get you high, when separated from the psychoactive ingredient known as THC, but they are still classified as being highly dangerous and addictive by the U.S. government.

Cannabidiol (CBD), Cannabinol (CBN), Cannabichromene (CBC), Cannabigerol (CBG), and Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) are all active, organic compounds in the marijuana plant—and each offers unique benefits.
Is Marijuana Bad for You?

CBD or cannabidiol is said to be the most-studied cannabinoid. It has potentially therapeutic effects on conditions like diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, nausea, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s. Martin Lee, of the non-profit group Project CBD, calls cannabidiol the “Cinderella molecule” and the “little substance that could.”

Related Read: Does Marijuana Cause Cancer?

Cannabinol (CBN) is available in marijuana in very small quantities. It is far less researched than CBD, but is said to induce sleep, ease pain and spasticity, increase appetite, reduce the spread of MRSA, and delay the symptoms of Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS).

Cannabichromene (CBC) has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and analgesic benefits. It may “promote anti-cancer activity in malignant cell lines” as well. This also is a relatively under-researched compound.
The other compounds of marijuana show similarly impressive potential benefits and uses. The wealth of information on this compounds is growing each day, though scientists sometimes struggle for funding in the face of the federal government who is committed to criminalizing this healthful plant.

Marijuana’s classification under the Controlled Substances Act is as a Schedule I substance. This places it on the same level as heroin. According to the government, these drugs have no medical uses and high potential for abuse and addiction. Marijuana is considered a very dangerous drug by the government, despite all of the research to the contrary.

But of course marijuana does have medicinal uses. In one case, a young boy’s father actually says marijuana oil is what made his son beat cancer. While the story isn’t recent, it is one that everyone should hear about.

Is marijuana bad for you? Simply recognizing that marijuana compounds have some medical use would reduce the plant from a Schedule I drug to another classification, allowing the medical marijuana trade to flourish freely in the states where voters have worked so hard to get those laws in place. But, the feds refuse to budge, white-knuckling their Drug War in the face of the American people who have spoken out on several occasions in opposition, and in the face of science which clearly says this plant has real, medical applications.

Sodas Contain Animal Carcinogen, Study Finds

Today’s leading cola beverages contain high levels of a substance linked to cancer in animals, according to new research.
An independent study commissioned by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) uncovered  4-methylimidazole, or 4-MI, in Coke, Diet Coke, Pepsi and Diet Pepsi at levels 4.8 times greater than those allowed in beverages in California.
4-MI is a byproduct of the reaction that produces the caramel coloring in brown sodas. The chemical has been found to be carcinogenic in animal studies.
The state of California has banned 4-MI in any amount that could potentially lead to one cancer case in 100,000 people. However the levels found in these 4 leading Cola brands indicated a lifetime risk of 5 cancers out of 100,000, assuming that people drink one soft drink per day. That risk rises to 10 cancers out of 100,000 people who drink only soft drinks containing caramel coloring.
The federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sets an even more conservative risk limit for contaminant in food additives of 1 cancer in 1,000,000 people.  But the study reported rates of 4-MI that are associated with 48 cancers in 1,000,000.
“Coke and Pepsi, with the acquiescence of the FDA, are needlessly exposing millions of Americans to a chemical that causes cancer,” said CSPI executive director Michael F. Jacobson.  ”The coloring is completely cosmetic, adding nothing to the flavor of the product.  If companies can make brown food coloring that is carcinogen-free, the industry should use that.  And industry seems to be moving in that direction.  Otherwise, the FDA needs to protect consumers from this risk by banning the coloring.”
In a letter to FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg Monday, CSPI shared the results of its study. The document served as an addition to the group’s petition of last year, which called on FDA to ban caramel colorings made with processes that generate 2-MI and 4-MI.
The study also found 4-MI in Dr. Pepper and Diet Dr. Pepper, but at lower levels than the other 4 brands. A sample of Whole Foods’ 365 cola had a concentration of 47 micrograms of 4-MI in a can, as opposed to the almost 150 micrograms found in a can of Coca-Cola.
The beverage industry responded to the study by pointing out that the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), Health Canada and FDA have approved caramel coloring as safe for use in food and drink.
“This is nothing more than CSPI scare tactics, and their claims are outrageous,” responded the American Beverage Association. “The science simply does not show that 4-MEI in foods or beverages is a threat to human health. In fact, findings of regulatory agencies worldwide, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, European Food Safety Authority and Health Canada, consider caramel coloring safe for use in foods and beverages. CSPI fraudulently claims to be operating in the interest of the public’s health when it is clear its only motivation is to scare the American people.”
Coca-Cola defended its product.
“Unlike CSPI, The Coca-Cola Company deals in hard facts,” said company representative Ben Sheidler in an e-mailed statement to Food Safety News. “Fact:  The body of science about 4-MEI in foods or beverages does not support the erroneous allegations that CSPI would like the public to believe.  The 4-MEI levels in our products pose no health or safety risks.  Outside of California, no regulatory agency concerned with protecting the public’s health has stated that 4-MEI is a human carcinogen.  The caramel color in all of our ingredients has been, is and always will be safe. That is a fact.”
FDA spokesman Doug Karas said the findings of the report were not of concern to consumer health.
“A person would have to drink more than a thousand cans of soda in a day to match the doses administered in studies that showed links to cancer in rodents,” he told Bloomberg.
The analysis was limited to 13 samples – 1 of Whole Foods’ 365 and 2 of each other brand – all purchased in the Washington, D.C. area.

Malawi sex workers wear Hijabs

I was personally not aware that Malawi had a somewhat significant Muslim population when I read this report by Nyasa Times discussing the trend of sex workers wearing the hijab in certain cities in Malawi. This is because I was aware that Malawi identifies itself as a Christian nation “with no religious conflict”, with the religion being followed by 83% of the Malawian population. Yet as I discovered, a minority of Malawians, 13%, are Muslim.
According to the report, sex workers are wearing hijab in order to attract clients from the expatriate Asian Muslim community. Hijabed sex workers are also popular among Malawian Muslims who as the article puts it “feel ashamed at dating bareheaded ladies” and those non-Muslims who want to know what it feels like to have sex with a Muslim woman.
There is no mention in the article as to whether the sex workers identify as Muslim, or if they are wearing the hijab for religious reasons. It is not unheard of for Muslim women who work as sex workers in majority Muslim communities or countries to wear hijab, and not just because of clients but because the hijab is part of their wardrobe. This happens in Northern Nigeria and Somalia for example.
The sex workers in Malawi who wear hijab apparently “rarely don’t take alcohol” and get most of their clienteles from bars and drinking joints, though according to the report, they pretend that they are just hanging out with friends on a night out when clients approach them.
The way this has been reported and discussed online troubles me, as Islam and the hijab are seen as adding an incongruous or titillating edge to the way women are objectified. It is telling that the accompanying image to the piece was one by “Islamic Erotica” artist, Makan Emadi whose work has been discussed on MMW, here and here.
And, on this article on Somali pirates, the caption under a woman dressed in niqab reads: “Prostitute Faduma Ali, who longs for the days when her pirate customers had money, chews the stimulant khat and smokes a cigarette.” The combination of the word “prostitute” with khat, cigarette, hookah, and niqab provokes a commentator to ask “how can you have a muslim prostitute?”
What makes the Malawian case unique is that it is not necessarily as simple as objectifying Muslim women, since these sex workers may or may not identify as Muslim, and it’s the same with their clients. This brings in several new elements which are not addressed here, such as how Asian Muslim men are affecting the lives of local Malawian Muslims.
The article ends somewhat ominously by citing “a prominent Muslim clerk” who has threatened to deal with those who are bringing “shame” to Islam’s reputation in Malawi.
Meanwhile the non-Muslim voices, as seen from the comments at Nyasa Times’ website, stress Malawi’s claim to no religious conflict, arguing that freedom of clothing is essential in Malawi and expressing concerns about Muslims reacting violently because that is how Muslims are.
The voices of women remains unsurprisingly silent in this report and in reactions. Whether their decision to wear hijab is simply a business strategy or whether these sex workers are Muslim and wear hijab, we simply don’t get to hear from them. It is presumably men that would lead to non-Muslim sex workers adopting hijab in a business move and it is men that are labelling this practice shameful and damaging to Islam’s reputation, while the voices of Muslim women remain mute.
